Energy Optimising a Combined Heat and Power Gas Engine
Due to interrupted power supplies our customer wanted to install their own power generation with a Combine Heat and Power Gas Engine. The electrical output matched their needs but to increase efficiency the customer wanted to capture and use as much heat as possible from the engine.
The solution
A solution was developed to make best use of the heat available based on our knowledge and experience of history of manufacturing thermal process systems.
The approach was to investigate the processes and energy use within the factory and establish where heat from the engine could be most effectively used. The solution provided heat to a range of energy users within the factory from process drying to space heating and hot water.
The waste heat captured from the engine, had the potential to substitute both natural gas and more expensive, electrical heating. Whilst 1400 kWh of energy could be recovered, consistent users
consumed a combined average of 720 kWh throughout the Year.
The engineered solution was able to recovery significant amounts of energy from a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) waste stream and return clean usable energy to the process and factory.
Over 720 kWh of energy is typically recovered with a value of £179,000 per year.
